What to expect on your first visit

When you book your appointment, you’ll have the option to fill out your intake paperwork online ahead of time to save yourself some time in the office. You’re also welcome to fill it out when you arrive — it takes about 10 minutes, so please plan to get here a little early if you go that route.

The first visit has two goals: to identify the musculoskeletal cause of your complaint, and to start relieving your pain that same day through treatment. We set aside a longer appointment for your first visit on purpose. We want enough time for you to feel heard, to receive a thorough, first-class examination, and to get some real relief before you head home.

Your first visit is an examination and a treatment in the same appointment. Here’s what that usually includes:

  • A review of your complaint and health history
  • A look at any previous imaging you’ve had
  • A physical and neurological examination — vitals, grip strength, motor testing, reflexes, and sensory testing
  • An orthopedic examination
  • X-rays, if they’re warranted
  • A review of your case and what we found
  • Your first adjustment or treatment
  • Care recommendations going forward

From start to finish, plan on roughly 30 to 50 minutes.

What your care might look like

Every spine and every person is different, so we build your care plan around your exam findings and your goals — not a fixed package. That said, here’s the path a typical recovery tends to follow at our office:

  • Weeks 1–3: about 2 visits per week, while we focus on getting your pain down
  • Weeks 3–5: roughly 1 visit per week as you start to stabilize
  • Then: a visit every other week
  • Then: about once a month

For many patients, the bulk of recovery happens within the first six weeks or so.

The way we think about it: near-term, our first job is to get you out of pain. Mid-term, we want to get you back to the things you need and want to do, and support your body while it heals. And long-term — call us biased — we believe in continuing care. For most people that looks like a visit somewhere in the every-4-to-12-week range, whether the goal is ongoing maintenance, longer-term correction, or simply staying ahead of the next flare-up.

We’ll always talk through your options and what we recommend, and the decision about how far to take your care is yours.
